Direct printing on cakes and desserts — without confectionery papers
Why direct printing on the item beats printing on sugar and wafer paper — and what it gives a confectioner.
These days it is hard to find a confectioner — professional or amateur — who doesn’t decorate their work with edible printing.
Many start with printing on sugar or wafer paper, but as production volumes and quality requirements grow, more and more switch to direct printing on the item. What is the difference, and what advantages does a direct printer offer?
What direct printing gives you
- Confectionery papers are convenient for starting out, but they have limitations — additional cost, a separate transfer step, restrictions on appearance and printing risks:
- wafer and starch papers don’t deliver the high photographic quality that an inkjet printer provides;
- printing on sugar paper carries the risk of spoiling the print as the paper feeds through the printer.
- Direct printing is possible on a huge variety of cake surfaces — cream, glaze, fondant, chocolate…

- Picture a display case of white mini-cakes with mirror glaze or trifles. The customer chooses a photo, a caption or a logo — and a few minutes later receives a personalised dessert. That’s no longer just a cake, it’s an experience.
- You can use fondant for your own purposes:
- print on fondant and cover the whole surface of the cake with it;
- make a colourful bow or lace out of fondant…

- You’ll be able to make printed toppers yourself.

- With a printer, a standard trifle turns into a unique decoration for the festive table in 3 minutes.

- A printer lets you decorate not only the cake but its packaging too…

The list of possibilities that open up for a confectioner with a direct printer could go on for a very long time.
A result people notice
Direct printing makes it possible to create items that cannot be made any other way. For example, printing on mirror glaze leaves no one indifferent — you can’t achieve that effect with a paper sticker.

Which models suit
For direct printing on cakes up to 20×30 cm, the C10, the automatic C15N / C15WiFi work well, while for large format (up to 30×45 cm) — the E15A3.
